From the Bible, NIV translation, Matthew 10:16: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” “Wise as a serpent and innocent as a dove” is a shortening of the verse, meant to encourage caution and shrewdness while tempering it with kindness and humility, leaving behind a self-serving agenda and moving forward with mature trust and healthy wariness.
