Hand-crafted from start to finish, this stamped coin features the Latin phrase DUM SPIRO SPERO, which means “While I breathe, I hope.”
DUM SPIRO SPERO is a constant reminder that while we still live, nothing is futile and that hope springs eternal. One of the earliest recordings of the sentiment of DUM SPIRO SPERO can be found in the work of the Greek poet Theocritus (circa 300 BCE). As Theocritus wrote (even if it wasn't in Latin): "While there is life, there is hope, and only the dead have none." Even in our darkest moments, we can remember that our state of life is in itself an act of defiance against the forces that would undo us. Fight on for as long as you draw breath, and never surrender to defeat.
This phrase is also the state motto of South Carolina, where our studio resides.

I was diagnosed with cancer 2 months into the COVID epidemic. Adding to that crushing news, my spouse of 20 years decided it wasn’t something he could deal with and left. My two grown sons took up the slack, and the three of us rode into battle, fought hard, and I am now cancer free. So, as long as I breathe, I HOPE!

I have been eye-balling these necklaces for months, but in that time, I couldn't settle on one that felt like a good reminder for me. In just this start to the new year, I have been thrown through so many loops, it's ridiculous. Finally, with the struggle through it, I revisited this site and as soon as I saw this saying, I knew that it was perfect. It's such a lightweight, dainty charm and I just love it! Only odd thing I'm finding is with the ball chain oxidizing around my neck, the salt combining with the metal does give off a bit of an odd smell. xD So if anything, I might just have to change chains. Other than that, I love this little reminder! For with each day, with each breath, I shall hope.
