THIS TOO SHALL PASS - Brass Coin Necklace
Part of our new Captain’s Script coin collection.
Hand-crafted from start to finish, this stamped coin features the phrase "This too shall pass."
This adage first appeared in Persian culture, but has since been translated into many languages and used by many orators throughout the years. Abraham Lincoln was one of the more famous people who referenced this proverb in his speech at the Wisconsin Fair in 1859, one year before he was elected president. As the speech went: “It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: ‘And this, too, shall pass away.’ How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! -- how consoling in the depths of affliction!”
Lincoln’s commentary on the phrase beautifully depicts the dual meaning behind the words - the fleeting nature of good things in life, and the eventual end of difficult things. This necklace is meant to remind you of both perspectives, and to encourage you to enjoy life to its fullest and to endure hardships with an eye on the light at the end of the tunnel.
Coin pendant is 1" in diameter.
Please note: All our brass pendants are raw brass, meaning they are not electroplated and will develop a beautiful patina over time. We include a jewelry cloth with every order to help keep your pendant's original shine if you choose to do so.
