Hand-crafted from start to finish, this stamped coin features the Latin phrase DUM SPIRO SPERO, which means “While I breathe, I hope.”

DUM SPIRO SPERO is a constant reminder that while we still live, nothing is futile and that hope springs eternal. One of the earliest recordings of the sentiment of DUM SPIRO SPERO can be found in the work of the Greek poet Theocritus (circa 300 BCE). As Theocritus wrote (even if it wasn't in Latin): "While there is life, there is hope, and only the dead have none." Even in our darkest moments, we can remember that our state of life is in itself an act of defiance against the forces that would undo us. Fight on for as long as you draw breath, and never surrender to defeat.

This phrase is also the state motto of South Carolina, where our studio resides.

While I breathe, I hope

Maritime Supply Company consistently puts out a great product. Just about anything you buy from them could be considered heirloom worthy. Being a Sandlapper, I had to have this necklace with our state motto on it. Customer service is superb, if not the best I've ever dealt with.
